Cicero (105-43 BCE):Old Age,
c. 65 BCE

In the next place, in what way would old age have been less disagreeable to them if they were in their eight - hundredth year than in their eightieth?
One day in 2005, my mother told me: "I was told by my mother-in-law when she was over 80 years old that I would never understand the mind of 80-year-old until I myself become the same age. Now that I'm 83, I feel that I finally know what she meant. "

Mine Kanamaru (1893-1980)

I find that there are four reasons for old age being thought unhappy:

First, that it withdraws us from active employments;

Second, that it enfeebles the body;

Third, that it deprives us of nearly all physical pleasures;

Fourth, that it is the next step to death.
